# tab > tab is a time tracker and invoicing app for freelancers who bill by the hour. You track time per client, send the client a weekly work receipt with notes and links to the real work (no screenshots or activity monitoring), and turn approved hours into an invoice the client can pay online by bank transfer or card. Who it's for: Freelancers and independent contractors who bill clients by the hour: designers, developers, writers, consultants, virtual assistants, bookkeepers and similar. Especially freelancers billing their own clients outside marketplaces (clients met on Upwork stay on Upwork under its terms), HoneyBook users who lost its time tracker in September 2026, and Toggl or Clockify users who invoice somewhere else. ## Pricing - Free: time tracking, clients and projects, work receipts, invoices with your logo, PDF, CSV export. - Online payments through tab: no tab fee on the first $2,000 collected each calendar month, then 1% up to $10,000 and 0.5% above $10,000. tab refunds its fee on refunded payments. - Stripe's own processing fee is separate (US: 0.8% capped at $5 by bank transfer, 2.9% + 30¢ by card). Payments received outside tab (check, wire) are always free. - No card needed to sign up. Free invoices show a small “Sent with tab” line. ## Features - One-tap timer per client, with a live meter showing what's on that client's tab (unbilled hours and money). - Quick add in plain words (“2h figma northwind yesterday”) and a weekly timesheet you can type into. - Gap finder and gentle check-ins inside your working hours, so forgotten hours get billed. - Weekly work receipts: the client sees what was done with links (Figma, GitHub, Loom, docs) and approves it. - Close the tab: unbilled hours become a checked invoice in one step; the client pays by ACH bank transfer or card into the freelancer's own Stripe account. - Fixed-price work too: set a fixed fee, optionally split into milestones that are billed one at a time, and see your real hourly rate as you track. - Money and tax set-aside reports, CSV export of everything. - Polite overdue reminders, switched on per client: tab emails the client from the freelancer 3, 10 and 21 days after the due date, with the pay link. - Imports history from Toggl Track, Clockify, Harvest and HoneyBook CSV exports. - Works from AI assistants: a remote MCP connector (https://app.tabwork.app/mcp, OAuth sign-in) lets Claude, ChatGPT and others start/stop the timer, log time, and read tabs and invoices. It can’t send invoices or move money. - Works in any browser and offline; installable on phones from the browser. Native Mac and iPhone apps are planned. ## Not - No screenshots, keystroke logging or activity scores, ever. - tab never holds the money: payments go to the freelancer's own Stripe account. - Online payments are in US dollars at launch. ## Security - Your money never touches tab: Clients pay into your own Stripe account and Stripe pays out to your bank. tab never holds, moves or touches your money; its fee is taken by Stripe at the moment of payment. - Card and bank details go to Stripe: Your clients type card and bank details on Stripe's secure payment page. tab never sees or stores them. Stripe is certified to PCI DSS Level 1, the highest level for payment companies. - Only you can see your work: Each account is walled off inside the database itself, not just in the app, so one account can never read another's clients, hours or invoices. - Encrypted on the way and at rest: Everything travels over HTTPS. Your data is stored with Supabase in the United States, encrypted at rest. - No passwords to steal: Sign in with a one-time email link or code, a passkey, Google or Apple. tab never stores a password. - Yours to take or delete: Export everything as CSV at any time. Delete your account and all of its data yourself, in Settings, straight away. - No spying, no ads, no selling: No screenshots, keystroke logging or activity scores of you or your clients. tab never sells your data or shows you ads. - A real person behind it: tab is made by Brady UX, a design studio in Maryland, USA. Here’s a replacement.](https://tabwork.app/switch/honeybook-time-tracker-alternative/): HoneyBook retired its Time Tracker on September 8, 2026. tab is a free time tracker that turns hours into invoices clients pay online, and imports your old entries. - [A Toggl alternative that also gets you paid](https://tabwork.app/switch/toggl-alternative-for-freelancers/): Toggl Track is a great timer, but billable rates need a paid plan and it doesn’t collect payments. tab tracks time, sends invoices and gets you paid online, free to start. - [A Clockify alternative with free invoicing](https://tabwork.app/switch/clockify-alternative-for-freelancers/): Clockify’s free plan tracks time, but invoicing needs the Standard plan and it doesn’t collect payments. tab invoices and gets you paid online, free to start. - [A Harvest alternative without the two-project limit](https://tabwork.app/switch/harvest-alternative-for-freelancers/): Harvest’s free plan allows 1 person and 2 active projects, and can’t email invoices without Stripe. tab has no project limit and gets you paid online, free to start. - [A Bonsai alternative that starts free](https://tabwork.app/switch/bonsai-alternative-for-freelancers/): Bonsai has no free plan: time tracking starts at $9 a month and invoicing at $19. tab tracks time, invoices and gets you paid online, free to start. - [Hourly billing without the screenshots](https://tabwork.app/switch/upwork-time-tracker-without-screenshots/): Upwork’s hourly protection needs its desktop app, which screenshots your screen six times an hour. For your own clients, tab proves the work with notes and links instead. ## Rate guides - [Freelance hourly rates by profession](https://tabwork.app/rates/): What to charge per hour as a freelancer in 92 professions: employee pay from BLS May 2025 data, converted to the freelance rate it takes to match it. ## AI assistants - [Connect tab to an AI assistant (MCP)](https://tabwork.app/ai/): Remote MCP server at https://app.tabwork.app/mcp with OAuth sign-in: timer, log time, tabs, invoices.
