What it is
tab is a time tracker and invoicing app for freelancers who bill by the hour. You track time per client, send the client a weekly work receipt with notes and links to the real work (no screenshots or activity monitoring), and turn approved hours into an invoice the client can pay online by bank transfer or card.
Who it’s for
Freelancers and independent contractors who bill clients by the hour: designers, developers, writers, consultants, virtual assistants, bookkeepers and similar. Especially people leaving Upwork's screenshot-based tracker, HoneyBook users who lost its time tracker in September 2026, and Toggl or Clockify users who invoice somewhere else.
Pricing
- Free: time tracking, clients and projects, work receipts, invoices with your logo, PDF, CSV export.
- Online payments through tab: no tab fee on the first $2,000 collected each calendar month, then 1% up to $10,000 and 0.5% above $10,000. tab refunds its fee on refunded payments.
- Stripe's own processing fee is separate (US: 0.8% capped at $5 by bank transfer, 2.9% + 30¢ by card). Payments received outside tab (check, wire) are always free.
- No card needed to sign up. Free invoices show a small “Sent with tab” line.
What it does
- One-tap timer per client, with a live meter showing what's on that client's tab (unbilled hours and money).
- Quick add in plain words (“2h figma northwind yesterday”) and a weekly timesheet you can type into.
- Gap finder and gentle check-ins inside your working hours, so forgotten hours get billed.
- Weekly work receipts: the client sees what was done with links (Figma, GitHub, Loom, docs) and approves it.
- Close the tab: unbilled hours become a checked invoice in one step; the client pays by ACH bank transfer or card into the freelancer's own Stripe account.
- Real hourly rate on fixed-fee work, money and tax set-aside reports, CSV export of everything.
- Imports history from Toggl Track, Clockify, Harvest and HoneyBook CSV exports.
- Works from AI assistants: a remote MCP connector (https://app.tabwork.app/mcp, OAuth sign-in) lets Claude, ChatGPT and others start/stop the timer, log time, and read tabs and invoices. It can’t send invoices or move money.
- Works in any browser and offline; installable on phones from the browser. Native Mac and iPhone apps are planned.
What it doesn’t do
- No screenshots, keystroke logging or activity scores, ever.
- tab never holds the money: payments go to the freelancer's own Stripe account.
- Online payments are in US dollars at launch.
