What to put on a freelance invoice
A clear invoice gets paid faster, because nobody has to email you back with a question. Every one should have:
- Your name or business and how to reach you, and the client’s name.
- An invoice number that never repeats. Number them in order (001, 002…) so you and your client can refer to one.
- The date and a due date. “Due in 14 days” as a date (not “net 14”) is harder to miss.
- One line per piece of work: what it was, the hours or quantity, your rate, and the amount.
- The total, plus tax if you charge it.
- How to pay you. The more ways, the faster. A Pay button beats bank details in a PDF.
Hourly invoices: show the hours, not just the total
Clients question totals and accept hours they can see. Put each task on its own line with its hours. If you track time, attach what you worked on: tab sends clients a weekly work receipt with notes and links to the real work, and they approve it before the invoice goes out, so there’s far less to argue about later.

Is this invoice generator really free?
Yes. It runs in your browser, there’s no account and no watermark, and nothing you type is sent anywhere. Download PDF uses your browser’s “Save as PDF”.
How do I make the PDF?
Click Download PDF and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the invoice is included, not the rest of the page.
Can my client pay online?
Not from a PDF. Click “Send it with a Pay button” to open the invoice in a free tab account: your client gets a link and pays by bank transfer or card into your own Stripe account. Your first $2,000 collected online each month carries no tab fee; Stripe’s processing fee applies as with any online payment.
Does it save my invoice?
It remembers what you typed in this browser so you can come back to it. Start over clears it.
Can I turn my tracked hours into an invoice?
Yes: open “Paste your hours” and paste lines like “2h homepage” or rows from a Toggl, Clockify or Harvest export. Or use the timesheet to invoice converter.
